Best SUVs for Towing

Pickup trucks have historically been the go-to choice when towing needs must be met. However, there are plenty of SUVs out there that can get the job done while providing a high level of comfort and space during a long trip. But be aware, not all SUVs are created equal, especially when it comes to being up to the task of towing. Take a look at our list of the best SUVs for towing to see which fits your needs.

1. BMW X5

If you’re looking for a midsize luxury SUV that also gets the job done, the sleek design, sophisticated cabin, and smooth ride of the BMW X5 is an excellent choice. This vehicle has great handling, and the powerful twin-turbocharged V8 engine option gives drivers 456 horsepower. With the max towing package, you can tow up to 7,200lbs. The X5 seats 5 people and has a decent cargo capacity with around 34 cubic feet behind the 2nd row of seats. It is perfect for a family of 5 with a weekend’s worth of luggage.

2. Toyota Sequoia

The Toyota Sequoia SUV commands the road, handles well, and will hold its own in an off-road environment. It comes standard with a V8 engine giving you 381 horsepower. With the max towing package, it can handle up to 7,400lbs while in 4-wheel drive. The Sequoia is exceptionally roomy with the ability to seat 7-8, depending on whether or not you opt for the three-person split bench in the second row or go for the captain’s chairs.

3. Nissan Armada

The Nissan Armada boasts a powerful engine relatively agile for its size. The standard V8 means 390 horsepower to get the job done and allows you to tow up to 8,500lbs. The 2019 model also comes with quite a few standard safety features like forward collision warning, automatic forward emergency braking, and a rear door alert, which reminds drivers to check the back seat after parking. The Armada seats up to 8 people and anyone who is along for the trip will enjoy the upscale interior outfitted with high-quality materials.

4. Chevrolet Tahoe

Roomy, quiet and comfortable is what you get with the Chevy Tahoe. With a standard manual 6-speed automatic transmission and V8 engine, the Tahoe gives out 355 horsepower and has solid max towing capabilities up to 8,600lbs. It can seat anywhere between 5 and 9 people depending on how you configure it. You can opt-out of having the third row entirely to make more room for cargo and save a few thousand on your purchase.

5. Lincoln Navigator

Luxury meets power in the Lincoln Navigator. It provides a smooth and quiet ride within its spacious, comfortable interior featuring plush leather upholstery and wood accents. It comes standard with a 10-speed automatic transmission and a twin-turbo V6 engine, providing 450 horsepower and up to 8,700lbs max towing. If you really want to ride in comfort, you can opt for the Select Trim that comes with a heated steering wheel, adaptive suspension system, 360-degree camera, and wireless phone charging. The Navigator will seat between 7 and 8 people depending on whether you go for the 2nd row bench seats or the 2 captain’s chairs.

Though not as luxurious as some others such as the Navigator, the Ford Expedition is still a comfortable ride with plenty of room. When you select the Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package, the Ford Expedition has some of the highest max towing capacity of any SUV at a whopping 9,300lbs. It offers a turbocharged V6 with 375 horsepower, though the Platinum trim option gives you a bit more at 400 horsepower.
