Ensure that your towing vehicle is of adequate size to properly control your towed vehicle. The weight and braking capacity should be large enough to handle both vehicles in an emergency situation. Check your towing vehicle manufacturers recommendations for towing, hitch load, and braking capacities. The hitch, ball, and safety cables (each individual cable) need to be rated at a minimum for the weight of the vehicle being towed.

Receiver Hitch FAQs

What is a receiver hitch and what is it’s purpose for towing?

A receiver hitch is a semi-permanent bracket installed to the rear of a vehicle to connect a trailer or other equipment like bike racks, etc. Receiver hitches are engineered to reduce stress on the frame while towing or transporting other equipment. With an increasing lineup of models, each hitch is engineered in the USA, backed by a top-line e-coat finish, and tested with SAE J684.

What are the towing capacities and class sizes?

There are two different towing capacities are specified by Gross Trailer Weight (GTW) and Tongue Weight (TW).

The receiver hitch is tested to your vehicle’s tow rating.  Verify vehicle’s tow rating in your owner’s manual, because it may differ from the receiver and use whichever is less.

Trailer hitches are organized into five classes to differentiate their dimensions, towing capacities, and intended vehicle uses. Each class is defined by specific weight capacity ratings and the dimensions of the receiver tube.

Although these classifications are informative, it’s critical to recognize that hitches are tailored to fit specific vehicles. To ensure you choose the correct hitch, it’s advisable to use our Select Your Vehicle tool, where you can input details like the year, make, model, and style of your vehicle for a precise match.

How hard is it to install a receiver hitch?

Receiver hitches can be installed in less than an hour. Most of the holes required on most vehicles use pre-exsisting frame holes. Some installs may require some trimming or drilling.

What is an e-coat paint system?

At Blue Ox, we’ve installed a top-of-the-line TTX e-Coat system. A multi-stage immersion process ensures cleanliness and maximum paint adhesion. A high voltage is sent through the e-coat to bond the paint to the parts, making them highly corrosion-resistant. This is followed by a powder coat for UV resistance and aesthetic finish.

Only electro-coat products have consistently met the high-performance standards of the Automotive, General Industrial, Heavy Machinery, Truck and Bus, Military, Underbody, and Agricultural performance standards of today’s leading OEM producers.
